Yards to inches turns a yardage figure into a measurement you can mark with a tape — useful when a pattern lists inches but the fabric came off a bolt sold by the yard, or when a sports or landscaping distance in yards needs to be laid out precisely. It’s a multiplication by 36, and the calculator also gives feet and centimetres.
The yards to inches formula
The 36 is 3 feet per yard times 12 inches per foot. For centimetres, multiply the inches by 2.54; for feet, multiply the yards by 3.
Worked example
The calculator’s default is 2 yards.
That’s also 6 feet, and in metric
What Your Results Mean
The Inches result is your direct conversion for measuring and cutting. The Feet equivalent provides an intermediate unit that is often easier to visualize. The Centimeters result enables metric comparisons, useful when working with international patterns or suppliers.
Fabric and sewing context
Fabric stores sell by the yard, but patterns list measurements in inches. A dress requiring 45 inches of fabric length needs 1.25 yards (45 / 36). Conversely, if you bought 2.5 yards, you have 90 inches to work with. Always verify your pattern’s seam allowances and matching requirements before cutting.

For the reverse conversion (inches back to yards), use the inches to yards converter. If you need to convert yards to metric units directly, the centimeters result above handles that, or use the inches to meters converter for the inch result. For smaller conversions within imperial, the inches to feet calculator covers that relationship.
Fractions of a yard in inches
Fabric counters cut in fractions of a yard, so it helps to know the inch equivalents. Each is just the fraction times 36:
| Fraction of a yard | Inches |
|---|---|
| 1/8 yd | 4.5 in |
| 1/4 yd | 9 in |
| 1/3 yd | 12 in |
| 1/2 yd | 18 in |
| 2/3 yd | 24 in |
| 3/4 yd | 27 in |
| 7/8 yd | 31.5 in |
A “fat quarter” in quilting is cut differently: half a yard (18 in) by half the fabric width, usually about 18 by 21 inches, rather than a 9-inch strip.
Square yards to square inches
Carpet, turf and landscape fabric are often priced by the square yard. A square yard is 36 inches by 36 inches:
So a rug of 3 square yards covers
Common mistakes
- Using 12 instead of 36. 12 converts feet to inches. A yard is 3 feet, so it’s 36 inches.
- Treating a yard as a metre. A metre is about 39.37 inches, roughly 3.4 inches longer than a yard. Ten yards of fabric is about 34 inches short of ten metres.
- Forgetting area needs 36 squared. Square yards to square inches uses 1296.
- Buying exactly the inches you need. Fabric shrinks in the wash and needs squaring up. Add a few inches before converting back to yards.
