Rational Equations Practice Problems

These problems follow the rational equations lesson. Use them as a solving rational equations worksheet: note the restrictions first, then clear the fractions.

The steps

  1. List the values that make a denominator zero.
  2. Multiply every term by the LCD.
  3. Solve the equation that remains.
  4. Reject any answer from step 1.

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Skipping the excluded values. Find values that make any denominator zero before solving.
  • Not checking solutions. Reject any answer that makes a denominator zero; it is extraneous.
  • Multiplying only some terms. Multiply every term on both sides by the LCD.
  • Cancelling across addition. Only factors cancel; does not simplify to 2.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I clear the fractions?+

Multiply every term on both sides by the least common denominator of all the fractions.

What if my answer makes a denominator zero?+

It is extraneous and must be rejected. If no answers remain, type none.

How do I type my answers?+

Type numbers without units, fractions like 5/3, and expressions like 2x + h. For intervals use parentheses or brackets and oo for infinity, for example (2, oo).
