Sigma Notation Practice Problems

These problems follow the sigma notation lesson. Write the terms out before adding until the pattern is familiar.

Reading the notation

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Miscounting the terms. has terms, not 5.
  • Applying the exponent to the wrong thing. In , only is squared; in , the whole is.
  • Pulling out a term that depends on . Only constants factor out: , but .
  • Forgetting the constant term. , not 3.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you evaluate sigma notation?+

Replace k with each whole number from the lower limit to the upper limit, write out each term, and add them.

How many terms does a sigma sum have?+

Upper limit minus lower limit, plus one. A sum from k = 3 to 12 has 10 terms.

How do I type my answers?+

Type numbers without units or commas, and fractions like 7/9. For formulas, use n and ^ for powers, such as 3n - 1 or 5*2^(n - 1).
