Implicit Differentiation Practice Problems

These problems follow the implicit differentiation lesson. They start with circles and simple curves and build up to products, trig and exponential terms, and a second derivative.

The method

  1. Differentiate both sides with respect to .
  2. Multiply the derivative of every -term by : .
  3. Collect the terms on one side.
  4. Factor out and divide.

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Forgetting when differentiating a -term.
  • Skipping the product rule on terms like and .
  • Leaving the constant side as a constant: it differentiates to 0.
  • Dividing before collecting all the terms.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should my answer contain y?+

Yes. Leave x and y in the answer exactly as they come out of solving for dy/dx; don't substitute a formula for y. The checker treats x and y as separate letters, so a form that is only equal on the curve, such as writing 1/(2√x) instead of 1/(2y) for y² = x, won't be recognised.

Do I need to simplify my answer?+

No. Any expression equal to the correct one is accepted, so -(2x + y)/(x - 2y) is marked correct for (2x + y)/(2y - x).
