Derivatives of Inverse Trig Functions Practice Problems

These problems follow the derivatives of inverse trig functions lesson. They start with the basic formulas and build up to the chain and product rules.

The formulas

  • and
  • and
  • With an inside function : and

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Not squaring the whole inside: gives , not .
  • Leaving out in the numerator.
  • Dropping the minus sign on arccos.
  • Reading as .

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I type arcsin, arctan and square roots?+

Type arcsin(x) or asin(x), arctan(x) or atan(x), and arccos(x) or acos(x). sin^-1(x) and tan^-1(x) also work. Type square roots as sqrt( ), for example 4/sqrt(1 - 16x^2).

Do I need to simplify my answer?+

No. Any expression equal to the correct derivative is accepted, so (1/2)/sqrt(1 - x^2/4) is marked correct for 1/sqrt(4 - x^2).
