Derivatives of Trig Functions Practice Problems

These problems follow the derivatives of trig functions lesson. They start with the six basic rules and build up to products, quotients, the chain rule and higher derivatives.

The six rules

  • and
  • and
  • and

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Dropping the minus sign on the derivatives of cos, cot and csc.
  • Forgetting the inner derivative in or .
  • Confusing with : the first belongs to , the second to .
  • Missing when simplifying a quotient.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I type sec², csc and cot?+

Type sec(x)^2 or sec^2(x) for sec squared, and csc( ) and cot( ) for cosecant and cotangent. Put * between factors if a term could be ambiguous, such as 2x*cos(x) - x^2*sin(x).

Do I need to simplify my answer?+

Only where a problem asks. Any expression equal to the correct derivative is accepted, so cos(2x) is marked correct for cos(x)^2 - sin(x)^2.
