Optimization Practice Problems

Write the quantity you want to maximize or minimize, use the constraint to get it in one variable, set the derivative to zero, and check that you have the absolute max or min. Read each question to see whether it wants the value or the dimension.

Optimization Practice Problems

These problems follow the optimization lesson. Each one asks for the largest or smallest value of a quantity, or the input that produces it.

The method

  1. Draw a picture and name the variables.
  2. Write the quantity to optimize, and use the constraint to put it in one variable.
  3. Find the domain, then solve .
  4. Check that the critical point gives the absolute max or min, then answer the question asked.

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Differentiating before eliminating a variable. The function must depend on one variable.
  • Skipping the check. Compare with the endpoints, or use the sign of .
  • Giving the x-value when the question asks for the value, or the other way around.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know my answer is a maximum and not a minimum?+

Check it. On a closed interval, compare the critical points with the endpoints. Otherwise use the second derivative: f″ < 0 at the only critical point means a maximum.

How should I type my answers?+

Type a number, without units. Exact forms like sqrt(11)/2 are accepted, and so are decimals.
