How the difficulty levels work
Each level changes two things: how many numbers are added together, and how large those numbers can be.
Easy: two numbers, 1–20 e.g. 14 + 8
Medium: two numbers, 10–500 e.g. 253 + 143
Hard: three numbers, 50–999 e.g. 590 + 615 + 919
Easy problems stay small enough to solve mentally, on fingers, or by counting on. This is the level for building automatic recall of basic addition facts, the kind of fluency that makes everything downstream faster. Good fit for kindergarten through second grade, or for anyone rebuilding confidence with mental math.
Medium problems are large enough that carrying between the ones, tens, and hundreds columns is usually unavoidable. That makes them ideal practice for standard column addition (also called vertical addition or the standard algorithm), where the skill being tested is not just knowing that 7 + 8 = 15, but knowing what to do with the 1. Typically a match for grades 2 through 4.
Hard problems add a third number to the mix. Two things get harder at once: you have to track a carry through more than one addition step, and you have to keep three rows of digits correctly aligned by place value. Misalignment is the single most common source of error here, which makes this level genuinely useful for older students and adults who want to sharpen accuracy rather than just speed.

Practice ideas that actually work
A generator is only as useful as how you use it. A few approaches worth trying:
- Timed fluency drills. Set 20 easy problems and a two-minute timer. Track the score over a week and you get a clean picture of whether fact recall is improving.
- Error-focused review. Run 10 medium problems, check answers, then regenerate and redo only after reviewing each miss. Volume matters less than understanding the miss.
- Place-value work. Use hard problems and require the student to write out the carries explicitly. It slows things down and surfaces misconceptions that speed practice hides.
- Estimate first. Before solving a medium or hard problem, round each number and predict the answer. This builds number sense and catches wildly wrong answers automatically.
Why practicing addition still matters
Fast, accurate addition underpins an enormous amount of ordinary life: making change, estimating a grocery bill, splitting a check, sanity-checking a spreadsheet total by hand. When addition is automatic, working memory is freed up for the actual problem instead of the arithmetic inside it.
It’s also structurally foundational. Subtraction is addition in reverse, and fluency with one directly accelerates the other.
